I just got introduced to Paul Suares’ solo project VICTOR Y the other day and for some reason I knew I would like his track “Black Light” before I even played it. And man did I. The song is an interesting melting pot of all sorts of interesting sounds and textures that are stirred up, mixed together and served in a piping hot bowl of musical tastiness. The opening genteel vocals of the incredible Elyse Beer set a somber yet powerful tone right off the bat. And they ebb and flow with ease across a frantic but cohesive backdrop of clicking, clanging and whacking. I love how the song seems to pick up steam but somehow stay in the same great place if that makes any sense at all. In other words, there is a level of control and finesse to the song I can both hear and feel that is very appealing. And I never knew banjo strums could sound so good.
“Black Light” is the debut single for VICTOR Y and is the title track of a new EP that is now available here on Get Loaded Records. The passion, energy and honesty I feel behind the music is already driving “Black Light” to the top of the charts in Australia and it wouldn’t surprise me if that is just the start. I only hope he doesn’t forget the little guys who supported him in the beginning once the international big boys and girls soon come calling!
