I try to stay away from featuring artists or bands that garner up a ton of online attention all at once but sometimes the music is just too good. When I was searching for a song for my 100th review on my site, I was looking for one that was a good representation of how my musical tastes have changed over the years and “Peaks” by Austin band SPEAK is that perfect track. In all honesty, I have never heard of SPEAK before last weekend and if I hadn’t received a recommendation from RAC himself, I probably still wouldn’t have. But I am definitely glad I did. “Peaks” is without a doubt the most interesting and creatively crafted songs I have heard in a very long time.
“PEAKS” showcases very little flash but the rolling nuances throughout the song makes me feel as if I am on a sailboat bouncing on the waves or driving a car through a very hilly mountain range. There is a nice ebb and flow to the vocals I can feel grabbing me at certain points and pushing me away in others. From the gorgeous harp intro and various sprinkles of tropical like rhythms to a standout acapella break, SPEAK lays out a beautiful track full of emotional highs and lows. Above all else, there’s a nostalgic energy and feel surrounding the track that seems vaguely familiar to me but sounds like nothing I have ever experienced before. Now that’s a pretty amazing feat.
SPEAK will be playing some dates with RA RA RIOT over the next few weeks and if you are in my neck of the woods, check them out at The Crescent Ballroom on May 9th here in Phoenix. I just might have to get some tickets to this show!
