Behind the beautifully chunky piano laden vibe on “I Stand Alone”, by the ROBERT GLASPER EXPERIMENT, is a message of courage and inner strength that hits home even though the interlude by Michael Eric Dyson might not be directed exactly towards me. Featuring the always smooth MC skills of Common along with the vocal talent’s of Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, “I Stand Alone” delivers lyrics with undeniable substance. The idea of being who I am and not what others around expect or want me to be is a powerful concept I try to be conscious of everyday. Yet a lot of people I know don’t seem to pay all that much attention to. Everyday I look around and see people close to me who conform to societal pressures, expectations and stereotypes and I often wonder how they got to that point in the first place. Did they give up trying to be different over time and to think outside the box or did they ever even try. It’s probably a question without an easy answer. Even so, listening to “I Stand Alone” is a unique experience and makes me really think about and question many things in my life I probably wouldn’t have thought all that much about otherwise.
“I Stand Alone” is one of what looks like many insanely incredible tracks from ‘Black Radio 2’, set to drop on October 29th. Preorder the album here!
