It’s been hard to let go of songs from 2013 even though we are well into the new year. Great music like “Murakami” by LA-based duo MADE IN HEIGHTS is making it very difficult for me to turn the page. “Murakami” packs a mighty powerful punch from the very first sound and continues delivering them with hard-hitting trap-style breakdowns that seem to catch me by surprise each and every time. From the rewind-like Japanese dialogue intro and the addicting synth chord melodies, to the nicely placed vinyl scratches, I find myself on the edge of my seat breathing in all the exciting elements as they suddenly drop in all around me. It’s the type of song where each listen never quite feels the same. As new textures and accents seem to appear out of nowhere along the way. I love the soothing feel of the lead vocals as the lyrics sound almost like whispers coming straight at me. To the point of almost nodding off at times. The intricate production behind “Murakami” is absolutely impeccable to say the least. Serving notice that another great twosome is on the scene.
MADE IN HEIGHTS is Kelsey Bulkin and Alexei Saba and the pair plan to release a debut album early this year. If the album ends up sounding anywhere close to how creative “Murakami” does, 2014 just might be their year!
