It’s been a long journey for Dexter Tortoriello and Megan Messina, otherwise known as the Chicago-based electro pop outfit HOUSES. From battling through tough obstacles like drug addiction and dropping out of college to experimenting with different band styles in order to find their way, I believe the band has finally settled into their own musical niche in the world. Harnessing the power of their past, HOUSES has been able to channel some of their emotional experiences into exquisitely crafted music. Their latest single, “The Beauty Surrounds” is the perfect example.
It’s hard to describe how I feel when I listen to “The Beauty Surrounds” because their are so many visions that pop into my head. I hear the gorgeous smile of the love of my life, the last days of a friend battling a terminal illness and even the innocent cries of a baby who doesn’t know how harsh life can be (Is it just me or do you hear the crying baby at the end of the track?). I am uncontrollably overrun with expressions of love, sadness, anger, fear, and happiness as the lead vocals guide me along my way. The lyrics are gorgeously tragic and entrancingly real. To put it simply, “The Beauty Surrounds” is irresistibly compelling shining a bright light on everyone and everything around me.
