I remember blasting STARDUST’s “Music Sounds Better With You” back in 1998, and loving every minute of it. I couldn’t go anywhere without hearing it too. But like a lot of musical flashes in the pan, the one-time musical collaboration between DAFT PUNK member Thomas Bangalter, fellow music producer Alan Braxe and vocalist Benjamin Diamond quickly disappeared. Yet my fondness towards the song lives on. Happily breathing new life into the French House classic is über talented San Francisco based music producer Charlie Yin, aka GIRAFFAGE, and the resulting rendition is fantastic.
One of the signature elements of the original was a Chaka Khan sample that had a way of ringing in my head even after the song was over. But GIRAFFAGE eliminates this sample and takes the tune in a different direction that’s just as memorable. Behind beautiful waves of rolling synths, well placed signature vocal chop ups and a variety of pre-programmed percussion embellishments, “Music Sounds Better With You” sounds surprisingly fresh and modern. It comes across as a very stripped down and smooth track where I would feel comfortable sitting back and chilling to this track over and over again. This version may not capture the same worldwide presence as the late 1990s one but that might not be such a bad thing. Fifteen years from now I expect GIRAFFAGE to still be around!
