I believe in the old saying “when one door closes, another one opens” and new artist FRANCIS LUNG is the perfect example of this. Better known by music fans as the bassist for the now defunct band Wu Lyf, Tom McClung is back as FRANCIS LUNG with “A Selfish Man”; a stellar debut track that proves stepping through the solo artist door just might be more fruitful. Even if the lyrics feel like he is regrettably looking over his shoulder towards the past. I absolutely love the intro of lightly plucked guitar strums and steady composed finger snaps. A rather simple yet intriguing beginning. As “A Selfish Man” unravels and reveals itself to me, it quickly becomes clear the song is more personal and more thought-provoking than the upbeat tempo peripherally suggests. I feel a sense of nostalgic sadness mixed with a bit of renewed determination behind the vocals that is both engaging and gripping. And the Alan Watts snippet ending wraps up everything rather nicely. FRANCIS LUNG is starting a new musical journey filled with both excitement and uncertainty around every corner. But if “A Selfish Man” gives me any early indication, each new step will be well worth it. Pick up “A Selfish Man” on Jan. 16th!
