DEVENDRA BANHART has announced his return with the release of the first 2 singles off of his upcoming MALA album due to drop on March 12th. In “Für Hildegard Von Bingen”, BANHART uses the historical figure as inspiration to tell quite a farfetched story about a Catholic saint who turns her back on her commitment with the church to follow one of her visions (she was actually plagued by them her whole life) of becoming a VJ (Video Jockey-the funny part of the tale). The second single, “Never Seen Such Good Things”, talks about the highs and lows, in hindsight, of not being in love anymore. Both tracks are interesting and easy to listen to but “Für Hildegard Von Bingen” stands out more to me.
In reality, there is not a whole lot to “Für Hildegard Von Bingen” but it is a lot of fun to listen to. Banhart’s storytelling lyrics are short but vivid enough to mesh well amongst the breezy and relaxing tone of the song. The electric and bass guitars are warm and fluid throughout coming together to form a great wall of sound. It’s a track that you can ultimately close your eyes to and see the story unfold as it happens even though that journey only takes you two and a half minutes to complete!
MALA will be the 8th studio album release for the Venezuelan American artist and his first since 2009. I am sure we will be hearing more tunes from DEVENDRA BANHART’s newest creation in the next few months. Preorder the album here!
