Black City Lights ~ Give It Up!

Black City Lights ~ Give It Up Artwork!

A good piece of music has the power to take me places without me even knowing it.  “Give It Up” by rising Wellington duo BLACK CITY LIGHTS does just that.  Armed with an eerie and almost ghostlike sounding opening, “Give It Up” effortlessly takes me on a musically cinematic style ride that is both chilling and exhilarating.  It’s as if the music throws me in front of a classic black and white Indie suspense film, as the lyrics come alive right before my eyes.  On top of the melodically charged and relentlessly driving synth layer expressions, the beautifully hypnotic vocals paint a vivid picture of a person full of aggression and feeling.   Like in the line “it’s sickening, hands around my neck, and my chest is burning with my breathing”, the words are packed with deep emotions I can’t help but become entangled in.  “Give It Up”  is a great sounding murky track filled with deep rooted intensity but finds a way to come across as almost uplifting and empowering at times.  Quite an impressive feat for the emerging band.

BLACK CITY LIGHTS is comprised of talented producer Calum Robb and brilliant vocalist Julia Catherine Parr.  They are definitely making some big noise across New Zealand and will be embarking on a 3-month, coast to coast U.S. tour soon.  Be sure to pick up a copy of their debut album set for release August 6th on Stars & Letters Records!  Take it from me it’s a really good one!

Born in sunny San Diego and raised in central Illinois. I graduated from the University of Illinois @Urbana-Champaign and spent the better part of 10 years in sunny Phoenix Arizona after graduation. I now reside in Savoy IL and I try to make it up to the Chicago music scene as much as I can. Music has always been a part of my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
